Muhsin Ja'afar, affectionately known among his peers as Sparta, was born on 16 November 2000 in Minna, Niger State. He was the son of Ja'afar Mahmud and Amina Al'hassan. Raised in Minna, he grew up in a supportive household consisting of his parents, his father's other wife, and his younger siblings. His mother had four children, while his stepmother had two, and Muhsin was the devoted eldest brother to five younger siblings—one brother and four sisters.
Muhsin began his education at Zarumai Model School, where he completed his nursery and primary studies. He subsequently attended Father O'Connell College in Minna, completing his secondary education before dedicating himself fully to his work and religious responsibilities. To earn a livelihood and maintain self-reliance, he worked actively as a grain merchant.
From his youth, Muhsin demonstrated immense devotion to the Islamic Movement. He gave his time and energy to multiple responsibilities, serving in the following capacities:
Member of the Jaishi Shahid Ahmad (JASAZ) brigade
Volunteer in community healthcare services
Active participant in the Youth Forum
Muhsin showed total dedication to his spiritual leadership and viewed his organizational duties not merely as routine tasks, but as a sacred trust. He considered his colleagues in JASAZ as lifelong companions on the path to spiritual growth. He frequently reminded his associates:
This work in JASAZ is a responsibility we must bear. It is what we were brought into this world to do, and it remains a sacred trust placed upon our shoulders. Every one of us ought to recognize that this service is an essential duty.
Muhsin was renowned for his upright character, modesty, and self-discipline. He was dedicated to regular worship, persistent remembrance of Allah (dhikr), and voluntary fasting. He was a seeker of knowledge across multiple fields, spoke the truth even when difficult, and treated elders with deep respect. At home, his filial kindness was exemplary. His mother recounted that whenever she needed to go out, she felt complete peace of mind, knowing that Muhsin would attend to all domestic chores before her return. He regularly swept the compound, washed clothes, cooked meals, and bathed and cared for his younger siblings with gentle patience.
On Monday, 29 March 2021, corresponding to the 15th of Sha'aban 1443, Muhsin was observing a voluntary fast when he participated in a peaceful Free Zakzaky procession in Abuja calling for the release of Sheikh Ibraheem Zakzaky. Near the headquarters of the National Human Rights Commission, Nigerian police forces opened fire on the demonstrators. Muhsin was struck by gunfire in the chest near his heart and achieved martyrdom.
In his written will, Muhsin left vital counsels for his family and companions:
To remain steadfast with the leadership through every trial and adversity, without wavering under pressure.
To take special care of his mother, ensuring she is never left lonely or neglected, and requesting that comrades visit her regularly to offer companionship and recite Ziyarat Ashura for him.
To guard the trust of JASAZ with complete sincerity, striving to fulfill every assigned duty as a means of connecting with the Imam of the Age and attaining spiritual perfection.
